‘t Biermenneke started as a small, local pub in Nijmegen and quickly became a community favorite.
Over time, the pub grew into something much more significant, a beloved local beer brand.
The challenge was to create a visual identity that captured the essence of 't Biermenneke. The pub had a strong local following, but the brand needed something that communicated its rich story and growing popularity, especially as it ventured into creating its own beer. The name ‘t Biermenneke refers to the "young boy" or “little guy,” a term of endearment used by the pub owner for their 42-year-old son, who is an integral part of the business. This unique story needed to be reflected in the branding, without losing the essence of the beer’s quality and the pub’s warmth.
The visual identity was crafted to communicate both the playful and traditional aspects of ‘t Biermenneke. The logo features a young boy, illustrated in a playful yet mature way. By giving him a beard, the “young boy” is aged just enough to feel at home in a pub setting, bridging the gap between youthful charm and a serious appreciation for beer.
One unique detail in the logo is the boy’s beard, which is intentionally designed to resemble a fuggle hop. Fuggle is a traditional hop variety used in brewing beer, known for its earthy, aromatic characteristics.
Visual design
The logo and website now serve as symbols of the community’s pride and the pub’s deep connection to the people of Nijmegen.
Storytelling
This project allowed me to combine creativity with storytelling, helping to turn a beloved local pub into a successful beer brand with a design that reflects both its rich history and future potential.
The outcome
The integration of the fuggle hop in the logo is a perfect example of how design can highlight the essence of a product and make it feel more personal to the brand’s identity.
